Skytrax, the self-proclaimed world’s largest airline review site, has become the aviation industry’s go-to reference point for standards and best practices. Their yearly World Airline Awards has likewise become the industry benchmark.
In Paris, France, on June 18th, the 2013 World Airline Awards were again held with much fanfare. The event took place during the 7-day International Paris Air Show, the world’s largest aviation expo, at the Le Bourget Airport.
The Airline of the Year Award went to Emirates, who took the #8 spot the year before, in 2012. This year’s winners seemed to solidify the burgeoning airline and travel industries of the Middle and Far East, with the Gulf Carriers battling it out with eastern Asia’s legacy carriers for the top 10 spots.
The top 10 carriers in the SkyTrax 2013 World Airline Awards were:
2. Qatar Airways
3. Singapore Airlines
4. All Nippon Airways (ANA)
5. Asiana Airlines
6. Cathay Pacific
8. Garuda Indonesia
9. Turkish Airlines
Though the most prestigious prize went to Emirates, there are a number of categories where other airline were given a chance to shine. Cathay Pacific was deemed to have the “world’s best cabin staff.” Etihad Airways was given the grand prize for having the best first class service, catering, and seating. Garuda Indonesia was awarded the honors of keeping the “world’s best economy class.”
