The Royal Seat of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, located in the city of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spain, was the historical home of the King of Spain. San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a small town located about 45 km (28 mi) northwest of Madrid.
The massive site is actually composed of two parts, the Escurial (it is sometimes spelled with this “u” rather than an “o”) Monastery and La Granjilla de La Fresneda, a royal hunting lodge located 5 km away.
King Philip II of Spain commissioned the construction of the monastery in dedication to Saint Lawrence (San Lorenzo). It became home to the greatest political power of the period.
