These photos were taken in Maidan Nezalezhnosti, or Independence Square, the central square of Kiev, Ukraine’s capital city. Over the last month, this square has been the host of constant demonstrations and rallies, as the eastern European country faces financial deficits as it ponders with whom it shall align itself with – the European Union or Russia and its allies.

This conical structure posted with placards is actually the frame of a holiday Christmas tree that has stood in the square; protesters have used the carcass to display European Union and Ukrainian flags, a symbol of their stance against more involvement with Russia.
