Kingdom of Denmark | Kongeriget Danmark

Denmark is a country in northern Europe’s Scandinavia, though it is not fully part of what is termed the Scandinavian Peninsula. Its main body is a peninsula, Jutland, that comes up to meet the Scandinavian Peninsula as a stalagmite to a stalactite. Jutland is attached to mainland Europe at Germany’s most northern region; Denmark’s other neighbors include Sweden, and a bit further, Norway. The country borders the North Sea on its western side and the Baltic Sea on its eastern side, separating them from being one even more massive body of water.

Denmark is a sovereign country, and Jutland is just the largest part of it. Surrounding Jutland is the Danish Archipelago, a group of 407 islands; Denmark’s capital and largest city, Copenhagen, is located on the largest of these islands, Zealand (sometimes spelled Seeland). Other than these islands, Denmark also has two constituent countries, Greenland and the Faroe Islands, located on either side of Iceland in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Copenhagen is a wonderful city, and a great way to start (or end) a tour of Denmark. Its annual status as being one of the “most livable cities” in the world helps Denmark to earn its spot year after year as one of the “happiest countries” in the world. If you are a foodie, Copenhagen’s restaurants have more Michelin stars than any other Scandinavian city.

Stepping away from the capital, Denmark is full of scenic little towns and villages that dot the islands and Jutland. At any given one, you are sure to come across some combination of medieval castles, museums, Renaissance architecture – even Viking ruins! The coastline – and Denmark has a lot – is never more than an hour’s drive from any given point within the country.

Denmark is an idyllic country – apart from its being one of the happiest countries in the world, it has the highest literacy rates, low unemployment, and a great educational model. Come explore for yourself, maybe it’ll rub off on you :)
