Overview

Amsterdam is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands, with nearly one million inhabitants. It is one of the most visited cities in the world, because of its liberal ideals, access to legal carnal pleasures, world class institutions of art and learning, and its beauty. The city is situated with numerous canals running throughout, adding to its appeal, and more than 1,500 bridges traverse these canals. It is one of the top financial centers of Europe, and the oldest stock exchange in the world is located in this city.

The Amsterdam that most people get to know is the Old Centre, situated like an outdoor amphitheater in a semicircle fashion with the Central Station in the center. Outside the semicircle of this central district, six canals ring around the Old Centre: the Singel, the Herengracht, the Keizersgracht, the Prinsengracht, the Lijnbaansgracht, and the Singelgracht, forming the Canal Ring, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
